The Rabbi’s Daughter – Sweet Recipes

By Jaia Kiesel | Photography by Gustavo López

Why “The Rabbi’s Daughter”? It’s a title that has followed me my whole life, since I was a child.

Over time, I came to understand that this title came with certain expectations—but also with many opportunities. A few years ago, as a joke, I tweeted that one day I would write a book with that name. And here we are.

I chose it with humor, with affection, and as a way of embracing everything that brought me here.

And the recipes? They don’t come from a bobe or from inherited family secrets. My school was life itself: what I saw at home, what I tasted on the street, what I dreamed of while watching movies. I only really started cooking after I got married, in Argentina, while my husband and I were serving as community rabbis. We had to feed our family with more than just grilled sandwiches or cereal, so I began experimenting.

I started with desserts—my weakness—trying to create sweets that were delicious, kosher, and dairy-free. Spoiler: they didn’t always turn out well (at first, the amount of sugar was basically illegal). But I learned, I failed, I improved… and I found in the kitchen a place to express myself, to care for my loved ones, and to create something of my own.

This book is the result of that journey. Inside you’ll find:

  • Parve (dairy-free) dessert recipes, perfect for ending meat meals or for those who are lactose intolerant.
  • Some dairy options, some vegan ones, baked goods… and a savory bonus, because yes—it’s my book and I do what I want.
  • A conversion chart so everything makes sense, wherever you are.
  • A simple guide to blessings before meals.
  • And a small piece of my story.

Because this is not just a cookbook. It’s an invitation to reconnect with our roots, to laugh a little along the way, and to dare to do things our own way.

Enjoy!

Jaia.
